One of the more upsetting conversations was with a veteran entrepreneur from London who worked for one of Silicon Valley’s most successful technology companies, before relocating to Newcastle a year ago. After reaching out to people in city’s tech scene, the first person he met over coffee told him that if he valued his career, he should move back to London immediately.
In England an old law dubbed the Red Flag Act required self-propelled vehicles to be led at walking pace by someone waving a red flag. In 1895, The New York Times very aptly pointed out that it served to “destroy the usefulness of a horseless carriage.” The law was written before automobiles, specifically for steam-powered locomotives (below left), but it was so broad it applied to horseless carriages when they emerged (below right).
Never forget that customer demand exists as one part of the picture. Demand from internal teams and the market are also essential ingredients that feed your product roadmap; a roadmap driven by customer feedback alone causes more harm than good.
