Start With Bottom Right

Mobile OS needs to acknowledge the dominance of the right thumb. And I say that as a lefty who uses my right hand to navigate my phone screen.

In a world where the majority of the population are right handed, why are we swiping left-to-right to unlock? Why do app icons cascade from left to right and from top to bottom?

Why is the first page the one furthest to the left of the row?

It feels as though basic navigation orientation in phone OS is still being driven by desktop OS and to a certain extent, bias informed by millions of years of reading books where the binding is on the left, and the top left corner is the starting point.

Human intuition might have initially been informed by these habits and expectations, but I think it’s safe to say that we can start designing OS that is truly mobile first, and that starts with the right thumb.
