Every data-driven process of insight creation starts with acquiring data. But today it is less and less about the ability to collect the data, and more about connecting the dots among the never-ending proliferation of data, from any place, in any form.

In strategic communication, it usually starts with content and media channels. Today, a pragmatic and agnostic approach to sourcing content reflects an ongoing, dynamic shift in content acquisition and distribution. 2010s to 2020s: paradigm shift toward VUCA

At the end of the 2000s and the beginning of the 2010s, generating value from big data was all the rage. Clive Humby, the man behind the Tesco Clubcard and one half of data science firm Dunnhumby, is credited with having coined the phrase “data is the new oil”. Data could be extracted and harvested in order to be processed and refined in an increasing value chain of data-driven approaches to marketing, communication, business in general. At the end of the 2010s and the beginning of the 2020s, we see a broad shift away from ‘value extraction’, toward regeneration, participation and collaboration. This is a reaction to declines of trust and truth, a broad scepticism towards institutions and a general feeling that the world has become more complex, more volatile and less predictable — in spite of the continued exponential expansion of the ‘dataverse’ and related promises of predictive data models in all walks of life. …

Health Evolved

There needs to be a seismic shift in the way healthcare is perceived and delivered. Ever-increasing demands on healthcare provision, due largely to ageing populations and the increasing impact of non-communicable diseases, together with disruptive technological advances challenging established norms of provision, mean current ways are not fit for purpose or sustainable.

The first shift requires the greater uptake of technology. In many emerging markets it is already possible to have a web consultation and diagnosis with a doctor, followed by access to online treatment purchased via an approved digital pharmacy using a smartphone-enabled banking app. All this for a patient who may never have been able to see a doctor in person due to the distance of travel involved and paucity of health professionals in their territory. This means that new entrants to the health delivery system can quickly gain valuable ground in countries where doctor to patient ratios are low, and existing, Government-run, services struggle to meet the needs of rural populations. The data consistently shows that consumers in developed countries are also open to new healthcare options if the price and quality are traditional healthcare providers (with those caveats) and in the US the figure is around 64%. I/O is fascinated by the way innovations are often being made more swiftly in emerging economies. …

THE SEISMIC ECONOMIC SHIFT CHANGING OUR WORLD

Over the last decade, there has been much talk of the future impact of emerging economies with the terms BRIC and MINT countries being coined to highlight those potential markets where significant value might be achieved. Often this value is perceived purely through the lens of the ‘developed’ nations and what they can derive from these markets economically, but this is not what value means to the people in these countries.

Even though there are still many challenges that emerging markets need to overcome to reach their full potential, there are many more positive developments happening across these countries that need to be explored and better defined. …
