In a major development, OpenAI has shared that its groundbreaking Sora AI model for generating video from text will be made available to the public later in 2024.

First unveiled this February, Sora stunned the world with demonstrations showing its ability to vividly bring text descriptions to life as realistic video clips. However, the model was only accessible to a limited number of testers as OpenAI carried out evaluations to ensure its responsible use.

Now, according to CTO Mira Murati, Sora has progressed well in its testing phase and will launch “in a few months”. While an exact release date has not been given, this indicates the wait for the general public to experience Sora’s capabilities will soon be over.

When available, Sora will let users create original videos up to a minute in length from written prompts. It understands both the high-level description and subtle real-world details needed to make the scenes come alive in a visually compelling way.

While still early in its development, Sora already shows a nuanced grasp of language, characters, emotions, multi-shot scenes and physical simulation. OpenAI continues iterating to further strengthen these abilities.

Safety and trust remain top priorities, with efforts underway to detect any misleading generations. Sora videos will also carry metadata to identify their artificial origin.

The launch of Sora later this year has the potential to be a landmark moment, opening up a new frontier of visual storytelling empowered by AI. It will be fascinating to see how content creators leverage this innovative tool.
