The Highwaymen

This movie concerns the capture of Bonnie and Clyde; however, Bonnie and Clyde make few appearances in the film. The two main characters are retired Texas Rangers who were called upon to finally put an end to the crime spree that had terrified and fascinated the nation.

I almost gave up on this film several times. Why? In many ways it is flawless! Cinematography, casting, acting, dialogue, special effects, directing, period scenery… it’s hard to find anything wrong. It is very well crafted.

But it moves so slowwwwwly….. Both main characters (Woody Harrelson and Kevin Costner) expertly portray road-weary, life-weary retired Texas Rangers. They talk slow. They move slow. They have aches and pains. It is obvious that they have seen more of life (and death) than most people ever will. There’s so much grit lurking under the surface.

I continued watching, honoring the quality of the production, even if it wasn’t all that exciting. I’m glad I did. Let’s just say the foreplay is exceedingly long, but the climax makes up for it!!

One of the things this film portrayed that I was not so aware of was how loved and admired Bonnie and Clyde were. They were “rock stars.” People likened them to Robin Hood, stealing from the rich (banks). But they were ruthless and brutal, killing anyone who stood in the way. From what I could tell the story was fairly accurate, historically.

Will you like this? Should you watch it?

If you can appreciate a movie that is like steak and fine wine that needs to be sipped and savored slowly, knowing you’ll have a nice buzz at the end, give this a try.

If you need continuous action, rapid dialogue, and sensationalism, you probably won’t like it.

Streaming on Netflix as of October 6, 2019.
