Health Care — A Canadian Asks: What is a Deductible?

I don’t understand the use of the term ‘deductible’ in all the endless talk about the US health care system. In Ontario and some other provinces, there are no visible premiums, they are rolled into income taxes. Here in BC, we do pay a monthly premium, which is quite low for people with low incomes. But it’s not like car insurance. We also have a single payer car insurance system, but in that case there is a deductible. The owner has to pay the first few hundred dollars of cost of things like accident repair. By contrast, the government run medical plan just pays the doctor or hospital what they charge. Nothing that I would call a deductible. I don’t what the term means in a medical context.
