Thanks Fierce Force 💃🏼 for the prompt and Kathy for hosting. I loved this little story most of which might be true and it inspired this…..

Dear Friend

Lost men of the brave Seventy Seventh

From their wounded worm’s eye view

Saw you fall so let go last hope

but you rose back into the blue.

Fly Cher Ami, fly away home

And deliver this message alone…

“Cease fire for God in Heaven’s sake,

Your weapons are killing your own!”

October 1914, Major Whittlesey is down to his last carrier pigeon. All around are dead and wounded soldiers and those still able to resist are counting their remaining ammunition. To add insult to injury they are taking friendly fire. So Whittlesey sent a brave little pigeon off home. As she rose up into the smoke filled sky she took a bullet to her chest, was blinded and one of her legs was left hanging by a thread. As she fell the soldiers on the ground couldn’t watch so they didn’t see the determined little bird rise Phoenix like to fly. 25 miles in 25 minutes to deliver her message. Almost 200 men were saved.
