It’s Morphin Time
Morphin, now available on the App Store.
We’re entering a new paradigm for media generation, one of synthetic media. It’s generating faces that don’t exist and living through CGI Instagram influencers. It’s born of developments in deep learning, where generative algorithms can now generate and synthesize media on their own. And if Lil Miquela’s 1.5 million Instagram followers, and the 10’s of millions of comments to those post are anything to show for it, people are now interacting at the intersection of what’s real and synthetic.
Much of this technology has been reserved for research experiments-turned-viral websites, that give us a window into the potential application of this tech, without actually letting us create with it (unless you are clued in on the latest GitHub repos). Lil Miquela gives us an accessible means to interact with synthetic media, but a team of designers and engineers work behind the scenes at Brud to bring the character into being on Instagram.
We built Morphin to take the hard part out of creating in this new world. We built an app that, with just one selfie, allows you to insert yourself into popular GIFs and movie scenes.
Our genesis was in the gaming world, with our first product taking 3D scans of people and turning them into avatars for use in games like GTA V and NBA 2K. Since then, the hardware side has been eradicated by the development of smartphone technology. On the software side, our GIFs are created using a complex sequence of processes including CNN-based semantic segmentation, mesh deformation and parallel scene rendering. Something that previously took specialist hardware and hours to process, is now rendered within seconds on your iPhone with ✨just one selfie✨.
In beta, Morphin attracted 50,000+ testers, who created 1 million+ unique GIFs and generated widespread WTF moments across Twitter. This is just V1 of what we believe will be a whole new format for storytelling set within the Synthetic Media landscape. We’re particularly excited about application of our tech to the film industry. As for today, we’re excited to open up public access to Morphin, the CGI studio that fits in your pocket.
