I was a strong advocate against guns until the afternoon of May 1, 1980. It was a hot morning in Mesa, Arizona. Two more weeks until school was out and I could go back home for the summer. I finished my workout at the track and as I was walking back to my car…bang, bang. Two shots rang out. I was lucky they missed me. After that experience I bought a gun and my opinion slowly changed. I returned to college in August of 1980, gun in case, kept in my dorm room. In those days you could register your firearm and the school would hold it for you but you could check it out at any time. After the new year I decided to keep my gun in my dorm because it was handy, if needed and was more convenient than going to school security when I wanted it. On Feb. 3, 1981, a young lady was being robbed at gunpoint. I saw this and immediately drew down on the suspect and ordered him to drop his weapon. He dropped his gun and fled on foot. I called the police from a nearby pay phone, they took a report, and the criminal was caught 2 hours later and convicted. He was sentenced to 3 years probation. I have only needed my gun a habdful of times in my life but BOY o BOY am I lucky to have it when I need it. Every law abiding citizen should own a handgun if thwey want to. Society is much more peaceful if honest people have guns. It is the loony people who should not be able to own guns, like the people in Chicago killing each other, or the nut in Las Vegas. They give guns a bad name.
