I think “data driven” is a key point here. Both Netflix and Amazon have remarkable, data-centric business cultures, and they’ve invested a *lot* in understanding what customers like. If they produce a show, they do so with a really good idea of not just how many, but which customers will like it. They don’t need blockbusters… they just need accurate predictions of how many people would pay for it and what the budget should be.
