Everyone knows about trap music, in the hip-hop and rap industry, but what many do not know is just how far back the origins of trap music trace back. Sure we all know about rappers such as Gucci Mane and Rick Ross rapping about the trap life, but there were rappers as far back as the early 90's describing about life that revolved around trap music. Trap music is a genre that originated in the early 1990's in the southern United States in particularly the city of Atlanta Ga. It has a more aggressive sound with extended sub-bass lines. The term “trap” was used to refer a place where drug deals are made and how it’s difficult to escape the lifestyle. Rappers, such as Cool Breeze, Three 6 Mafia, Dungeon Family, and Ghetto Mafia who were all out of Atlanta Georgia were some of the first to start using the term “trap” in their music. Later fans and critics started referring to rappers whose main topic was drug dealing became known as “trap rappers.” The only thing about trap music though was it just wasn’t just a genre of music it’s actual real life. One term that is heard a lot in trap music is the “trap house.” The trap house is where the drugs are made, trap houses are usually in the location projects, and the ghetto. Trap houses are usually old abandoned houses, with the windows boarded up to where you can’t see inside of them.

To the right is an actual trap house in Atlanta Georgia that was busted by Atlanta police two years ago. One location that many trap artist include in their music is a district in the city of Atlanta known as “The Bluff.” The Bluff is infamously known as the highest crime rates in the city of Atlanta and top five in the United States. Its also known for its easy availability of drugs, cocaine and heroine in particular. The Bluff became so famous in 2012 a film was released titled “Snow on tha Bluff,” which told the story of an Atlanta robbery boy and crack dealer.

Trap music has grown in popularity and many rappers still use trap life as their main topic in their music. One rapper in particular that I have to say is my favorite rapper Gucci Mane, discusses nothing but the trap life in almost every song he releases. Gucci has released a series of albums titled “Trap House,” his latest being “Trap House 5.” Currently Gucci Mane is serving time in prison, but has still be able to release albums. The thing about Gucci Mane’s music is he speaks the truth about the trap life, and doesn’t hold anything back which is what trap music is about. Trap music is becoming more and more popular with people today, and in my opinion it will keep growing in popularity.
