Medium is not running a zero-leadership experiment by any means. If anything it’s the opposite. We aim to explicitly identify the multitude of leadership opportunities that exist in a dynamic engineering organization; be it mentorship and coaching, running large technical projects, or being the point person for certain infrastructure components.
We want to avoid situations where areas of responsibility are unclear. We believe there are added benefits in a structure which helps avoid authority gravitating to the loudest, whitest, malest person in the group.
In practice our organization doesn’t look that much different from a more traditional org. Reconsidering default styles of leadership allows greater degrees of freedom; it gives individuals the opportunity to flex different muscles and play to different strengths.
