AI’s Calming Mantras
When something happens and you’re feeling overwhelmed, sometimes all you need is a short, soothing statement — a calming mantra — that reminds you you’re alive, safe, and grounded.
A few intentional words, repeated quietly to yourself, can change your inner state in just a few seconds.
Why They Work
Mantras have been used for thousands of years in spiritual and meditative traditions across cultures — from Sanskrit chants in Hinduism and Buddhism to prayers in Christianity to affirmations in modern psychology. What they all have in common is this: a simple, repeatable phrase that quiets mental noise and centers the mind.
Neuroscience research confirms their effectiveness. Repeating a calming phrase activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of your body that signals safety and rest. This response lowers heart rate, reduces cortisol levels, and helps you shift out of a reactive state. In essence, mantras tell your nervous system: you’re okay.
My Inner Storm
I share a lot of content online — ideas that challenge belief systems and the status quo. I’m committed to being honest and brave in that work. But no matter how aligned I feel when I hit “publish,” there’s often a storm waiting for me on the other side.
A few minutes or even hours after I share, the mental spin begins:
Maybe it wasn’t good enough.
Maybe I wasn’t clear.
Maybe it was the wrong time.
Maybe it will offend someone.
Maybe, maybe, maybe…
And when that inner monologue shows up (which it usually does), trying to ignore it or push through it never works. It just gets louder.
Finding Shelter
This is where ChatGPT has become an unlikely but invaluable tool. When the storm hits, I don’t just sit in it anymore. I immediately ask for help.
Here’s what that looks like.
Me: I’m worried that what I shared today was a mistake. Can you create a calming mantra to help ease my mind?
ChatGPT: Absolutely. Try this:
Sharing big ideas is brave.
What I’m feeling is normal.
I won’t feel this way for long.
I am safe.
I am strong.
I read it slowly. I say it again — and again. Within a few minutes, the fog lifts. I’m no longer in a state of panic. I’ve returned calmly to the moment.
How to Try It
If you’d like to experiment with this, here’s a simple exercise:
1. Open ChatGPT.
2. Copy and paste this prompt:
[Explain what you are struggling with]. Can you create a calming mantra to help ease my mind?
3. Repeat the mantra.
4. If it doesn’t ease your mind, tell ChatGPT why — and ask it to adjust.
That’s the beauty of AI: it listens, learns, and adapts in real-time.
You might be surprised how often just a few thoughtful words are enough to shift your emotional landscape.
Final Thought
Suppressing our feelings doesn’t make them disappear. It makes them louder. But a simple mantra, especially one crafted with care and intention, can provide a shelter from the storm.
The next time you feel emotionally turbulent, don’t just quietly endure. Reach out to ChatGPT. It will help you find the words that bring you peace.
