Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film directed, written, produced, and co-edited by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver. In the mid-twentieth century, mankind colonize Pandora, a lush livable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system, to extract the precious mineral unobtanium. The mining colony’s growth puts a local tribe of Na’vi — a humanoid race native to Pandora — in jeopardy of extinction. The title of the film refers to a genetically altered Na’vi body that is used to engage with the people of Pandora and is controlled by the brain of a distant human.
Cameron began working on Avatar in 1994, when he prepared an 80-page treatment for the film. Filming was meant to begin after Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster Titanic was completed, with a projected release date of 1999; however, Cameron said that the requisite technology was not yet ready to realize his vision of the picture. In 2005, work on the Na’vi language began, and in early 2006, Cameron began writing the script and fictional universe.
Due to a breakthrough variety of new visual effects Cameron achieved in collaboration with Weta Digital in Wellington, Avatar was officially budgeted at $237 million.Other estimates place the production cost between $280 million and $310 million, including a $150 million promotion budget. The movie makes considerable use of innovative motion capture filmmaking techniques, and it was distributed in select South Korean cinemas for standard watching, 3D viewing (using the RealD 3D, Dolby 3D, XpanD 3D, and IMAX 3D formats), and “4D” experiences.
Avatar opened in London on December 10, 2009, and in the United States on December 18, 2009, to generally good reviews, with critics applauding the film’s revolutionary visual effects. The picture smashed multiple box office records during its theatrical run, becoming the highest-grossing film in the world at the time, as well as in the United States and Canada, surpassing James Cameron’s Titanic, which had held both marks for twelve years.Avatar was the highest-grossing film in the world for over a decade until it was surpassed by Avengers: Endgame in 2019, until Avatar was re-released in China in March 2021 and reclaimed the top place. With a total of more than $3 billion in box office receipts after inflation, Avatar is the second highest-grossing film of all time, after only Gone with the Wind.It was also the first picture to make more than $2 billion in the United States, as well as the best-selling video title of 2010. Avatar had nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three, for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects.
The film’s success prompted the release of 3D televisions and an upsurge in the popularity of 3D films.After the success of the film, Cameron negotiated a deal with 20th Century Fox to create four sequels: Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar 3 have wrapped principal photography and are set to hit theaters on December 16, 2022 and December 20, 2024, respectively; sequels are set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028. Worthington, Saldana, Lang, and Weaver are among the cast members who are anticipated to return.
