There are many Ethereum blockchain games entering the market nowadays but are they really fun to play and do they need to be based on a blockchain anyway? Lets dig into the details.

Our team has been testing almost all of them and from our point of view, all blockchain games can be divided into two categories:

  • Cryptocollectibles
  • Cryptogames

Let’s start with cryptocollectibles. The problem with this category is that these games have no real gameplay.

Users are just buying tokens (and frankly speaking, this is just a string of digits stored on the blockchain) with some visual representation (can be a stamp, a country, etc) and hope to trade them for profit.

Several games in this category implement such features as breeding, but a collection of tokens (even unique tokens) without any possibility for interaction is not something many people want to own.

Nevertheless, cryptocollectibles utilizes unique features of the blockchain:

  • transparency (you can check the history of any game asset),
  • security (No one can steal your game assets if you keep your private keys safe, but ahem, let’s discuss the possibility of killing the smart contract by the owner in another post.),
  • immutability (no one can alter the history of transactions),
  • users can transfer tokens without any third party to another player.

Sounds exciting and fun? Probably, for a bookkeeper.

What about cryptogames? This emerging category has a few turn offs, which is the main problem when the blockchain is used merely to create hype.

Let’s face it: the blockchain is slow and costly to interact with. It is not fun to pay for every game interaction and wait a minimum of 10 seconds for your transaction to be mined. Any game which relies on a server instead of a blockchain will be cheaper, faster and more user friendly.

So there should be better motivation to use blockchain in games. And these should not just be the use of the word “blockchain” in promotional materials.

What Dragonereum offers?

Taking all drawbacks into account, we are offering a solution which we hope will define the future development of games built on the blockchain.

Meet Dragonereum — a blockchain based game which includes:

  • Advanced on-chain breeding with mutations and inbreeding penalties. As in cryptocollectible games, new breeds can appear and anyone can track the history of their creation. For this purpose, we will have fifty different dragons at launch with even more to be added later — this gives endless number of new breeds.
  • On-chain fights, experience points, level ups, skills, fight strategy and training of dragons. Now you are not only able to look at your blockchain assets, but you can also interact with them and decide the best ways to utilize their skills.
  • In-game economy.

Dragonereum is set to have all features of cryptocollectibles and cryptogames combined in one in-game ecosystem.

We’ll be releasing more details about blockchain dragons soon so follow us on Medium to stay up to date or join our Telegram, Twitter, Discord.
