Terry Crews is a former NFL player and prolific actor starring in movies like White Chicks, The Expendables, and FOX’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Terry Crews is known for always being a never-ending source of energy and is consistently in phenomenal shape. On multiple occasions, when asked what is his secret to his energy, great shape, and youthful looks at 49 years of age, he claims Intermittent Fasting is the key.

Intermittent Fasting is a method of fasting where you cycle periods of eating and fasting. Intermittent fasting isn’t a diet, it’s a method of eating. You’re focused more on when you eat, not so much of what you eat (however that is still important).

The typical intermittent fasting cycle (24 hours) looks something like this:

16 hour fasting time — meaning no food. Just water, coffee, or tea. (example: 7pm — 11am)

8 hour eating time — You can eat however much you desire in the 8 window. (example: 11am — 7pm)

Most people fast everyday already, while you sleep. With intermittent fasting you’re just extending that window a bit longer by skipping breakfast.

“Why would I want to fast in the first place?”

It was long held that jumpstarting your day with breakfast and eating every few hours throughout the day would jumpstart your metabolism, fuel healthy weight loss, and increase your energy but actually that’s not the case.

It turns out that by continuously providing our body with food, which requires energy to breakdown and digest, our bodies never get a break to recover, repair, and heal, which is critical for overall health, performance, energy, weight loss, and longevity.

Research has found that once the body finally breaks down all the food we’ve eaten and no longer requires energy for digestion, it transitions into repair mode and begins to use our energy to repair our cells. This process is called autophagy. During autophagy, the body looks for damaged or unhealthy cells and signals for them to be destroyed. [R]

Think of it like a CEO finally getting some time to audit his business to find any problems, wasted resources, or bad employees that could be costing the business and it’s future. Once he finds those issues, he gets rid of them or fixes them so that the business can continue to flourish.

That is autophagy.

Autophagy is the “secret sauce” of intermittent fasting that promotes anti-aging and longevity benefits while also reducing inflammation by helping the body clean itself, which makes our cells stronger and increases our health and energy.

This is what allows Terry Crews to stay at the top of his game 24/7.

Intermittent Fasting has some other benefits that’s Terry Crews didn’t mention in the video above that may have you considering trying out intermittent fasting for yourself.

Intermittent fasting has also been shown to promote healthy fat loss. After roughly 8–12 hours, your body runs out of it’s primary energy source, glucose aka sugar. Once it runs out of sugar, the body is forced to run off fat for fuel.

One fascinating study [R] found some interesting results. Both sets of mice were fed the same high fat, high sugar diet. One group was able to eat whenever they wanted whereas the other group was on an intermittent fasting schedule. The results were shocking!

The group that was able to eat whenever they wanted, produced obese mice, whereas the intermittent fasting group produced lean, fit mice. The study showed it also improved a wide variety of other health markers.

Many people assume that if you are fasting, you may lose muscle. One surprising benefit of intermittent fasting is that it increases the natural production of Human Growth Hormone (HGH). HGH is associated with increased healthy muscle growth and preservation, while also stimulating fat loss. HGH is also provides powerful anti-aging benefits. [R]

This is likely the reason why Terry Crews always looks so buffed fit 24/7, hence his classic pec dance skit.

Fasting has been shown to increase Brain Derived Neutrophic Factor (BDNF), which helps promotes new brain cells to mature and develop and promotes connectivity within the brain. Fasting also has been shown to increase the production of epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine, important neurotransmitters in heightening brain performance, focus, and acuity. [R]
