Conquering the Boardroom with ADHD: Strategies for Black Women in Mid-Career

Do you ever feel like you’re constantly chasing deadlines and battling forgetfulness? Do well-meaning colleagues mention your “attention to detail” in a way that feels…off? These could be signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a condition affecting over 8 million adults — and Black women are often under diagnosed. In fact, Black adults are diagnosed 77% less than white adults according to the Journal of Attention Disorders. Even so, this isn’t necessarily a limitation. It’s a superpower waiting to be unleashed. Here’s how to succeed in your career as a thriving Black woman with ADHD.

Focus Like a Boss: Tools and Techniques for Peak Productivity

  • Become a Declutter Diva: Clear that desk, lady! A workspace free from visual chaos helps reduce stress and boosts focus. Plus, no more frantic “where’d I put that report?” moments.
  • Silence the Sirens: Constant notifications are the enemy of focus. Designate specific times to check emails and calls, and utilize apps to block distracting social media.
  • Plan Like a Pro: Use tech to assist you. Digital calendars and to-do lists are your new BFFs. Chunk projects down to smaller tasks. Schedule tasks with realistic timeframes and set reminders — sticky notes work wonders too! Also consider kitchen timers or hour glasses to help you with time management.
  • Move It or Lose It: Don’t let that creative energy stagnate! Take short movement breaks throughout the day. Walk, stretch, or do some desk yoga — you’ll be surprised how much sharper you feel.
  • Embrace Tech Solutions: Use voice recorders for notes and ideas that hit you fast. Apps like Evernote can organize information and tasks, keeping your brain free to focus on bigger things.

You’ve Got This: Building Confidence and Advocacy

ADHD can sometimes feel like an invisible barrier, but you have the power to shatter it. Here’s how:

  • Know Your Worth: ADHD often comes with strengths like innovation, out-of-the-box thinking, and boundless energy. Leverage these assets in your career!
  • Self-Care is Key: Prioritize sleep, healthy eating, and stress management. A well-rested, nourished you is a more confident, focused you.
  • Open Communication is Power: Don’t be afraid to have a conversation with your supervisor or HR about ADHD and accommodations that can support your success. The ADA protects you!
  • Seek Support and Community: Surround yourself with positive reinforcement. Join online communities for Black women with ADHD, or work with an ADHD coach who understands your unique challenges.

Remember, you’re in good company. Here is a list of famous people who also have ADHD:

Simone Biles, Olympic champion

Mel B, singer/performer

Michelle Rodriguez, actress

Brookley Wofford, advocate and social media influencer

Lisa Ling, journalist

Solange Knowles, musician

Mel Robbins, author and speaker

Trevor Noah, comedian

All have thrived with ADHD. You too can harness this energy to propel you to the top. Invest in yourself. Embrace your strengths, implement these strategies, and watch your career soar!
