Flamingo at Bhigwan bird sanctuary, 200 kilometers from Pune on Solapur road.

Flamingo is a beautiful bird about 4 feet high, with long legs, long-neck with rosy white stork-like bird, with a heavy pink bill turned down at an angle from about half its length.

Feeds in shallow water with the slender neck bent down between the legs and head completely submerged.

Sexes alike.

It is mostly seen in groups. It nests in Great Rann of Kutch.

STRIATED SWALLOW

It has blue upperparts other than a reddish collar (sometimes absent) and streaked chestnut rump.

The face and underparts are white with heavy dark streaking. The wing are brown.

The sexes are alike but juveniles are duller and browner, with a paler rump and shorter outer tail feathers.

SHIKRA

The adult males are ashy-blue-grey above with fine brownish-orange, barring on underparts, with deep orange-red eyes.

The females are comparatively larger and browner, with their eye colour varying from deep yellow to orange-yellow.

Juveniles have more pale-brown upperparts with pale dull yellow eyes.

Their tails are ashy brown with dark bands, and they have a black mesial stripe running down from the white chin across their throat. Their wings are rounded and they have a long tail.

WOOD SANDPIPER

Medium-sized brownish wader with a white belly, varied pale spotting and spangling on back. In flight shows plain upper wings, square white rump patch. Legs greenish yellow. Breeds in marshes in open coniferous and mixed forests.

Walks in shallow water, picking with its bill. Mainly found as singles or small flocks, not mixed with other species.

Bobs tail when nervous, but not habitually like Common Sandpiper.

Pied bush chat

The male is black except for a white rump, wing patch and lower belly. The iris is dark brown, the bill and legs black.

The female is drab brown and slightly streaked. Juveniles have a scaly appearance on the underside but dark above like the females.

ASHY PRINIA

Has short rounded wings and longish graduated cream tail tipped with black subterminal spots. The tail is usually held upright and the strong legs are used for clambering about and hopping on the ground. They have a short black bill. The crown is grey and the underparts are rufous in most plumages.
