Crystals are a powerfully attractive entry into studying the mystic arts. Beautiful, ancient, and of infinite variety, these energetic fruits of the Earth inspire every facet of human creative and spiritual life. While crystals are sometimes dismissed as a New Age “woo,” the fact is that they have been used for everything from healing to ritual to religion to interior decor to jewelry for millennia.

Take mainstream birthstones, for example. As early as the 1st century Jewish historian Josephus thought that there was a relationship between the twelve stones worn in the breastplate of Moses’s brother Aaron, the High Priest of the Israelites, and the zodiac signs. The breastplate featured four rows of three stones each, possibly including:

  • Carnelian
  • Peridot
  • Emerald
  • Carbuncle
  • Lapis lazuli
  • Citrine
  • Amber
  • Agate
  • Amethyst
  • Topaz
  • Beryl
  • Sardonyx

In the 8th and 9th centuries, religious scholars correlated the twelve apostles to these twelve stones, and this influenced the practice of wearing a different stone for each month of the year.

Precious stones have also been appreciated widely in the East. For example, in Vedic astrology, planets and the nodes of the moon are correlated with nine stones known as the Navaratna, and specific gems are assigned at birth according to ones astrology chart to support the wearer’s health. They are:

  • Ruby for the Sun
  • Pearl for the Moon
  • Red Coral for Mars
  • Emerald for Mercury
  • Yellow sapphire for Jupiter
  • Diamond for Venus
  • Blue sapphire for Saturn
  • Hessonite for the ascending lunar node
  • Cat’s Eye for the descending lunar node

And in 1912, Jewelers of America standardized the monthly birthstones, probably to increase their popular market appeal. While the apparently random assignment of stones to birth months may or may not energetically resonate with you as a modern day mystic, healer, or enthusiast, you might enjoy working with crystals according to their unique energy signature, based on your own zodiac sign.

And so we present to you a list of recommended crystals according to zodiac sign. Each zodiac sign includes at least one crystal to amplify your innate energies and another to heal and balance.

If you’re looking for a crystal for healing purposes, divination, or altarwork, consider selecting one according to your sun sign. If you’re looking for one to wear or for decorative purposes, select one according to your rising sign. If you’re looking for a crystal to help heal a relationship, or to provide energy work, work with crystals that correspond with both of your signs to help you attune to each others’ energy.
