Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.

Malcom Forbes said that, and he didn’t do too badly for himself. But does Education really work that way for everyone?

Thing is, all over the world, parents dream of better futures for their children, and invest in Education to see it come true. Professors and school administrators (and sometimes even their bosses!) work hard to try and deliver that Education. And yet…

Fancy ebooks and all — but still taking down notes on paper.

… nothing’s really changed or improved in decades. We have computers and internet access everywhere, but we still pack a couple dozen kids to a room to sit through lectures that are pretty much the same as their parents might have heard. Teachers still scribble on boards while students copy it down in notebooks, and everyone just hopes something sticks until the next exam.

There has to be a better way. Doesn’t it?

There is. Actually, there are as many theories as there are teachers, but there is 0ne we like best, one that consistently delivers results: it’s called Project-Based Learning, or PBL, and it’s been known in the education industry for decades. PBL is a form of student-centered learning that focuses on applying the knowledge students receive in-class to real-world projects as a way to increase student engagement, drive learning and improve outcomes. This application means students can see the value of what they’re being taught first-hand; knowledge becomes tangible, valuable, real. And if these projects have real-world, out-of-the-classroom existence? If students really believe in them? That’s when the real magic happens.

Isn’t that the face of a future scholar or two?

We believe that real-world PBL is the best way to not only feed the young minds of our children, but also to build flexible, adaptable minds for the future; as Mr. Forbes said, open, educated minds. Over the next few months we’re going to go into detail on PBL, how it works, why it works, and how you can apply it at your school using DreamShaper software — or not. There’s a lot you can do with what you have right now, and we hope we can help you.

Stay tuned!
