Rapid Aim Through Precise Movement: Picking the Right Hardware

Most esports club are sponsored by peripheral and PC manufacturers. Razer and Alienware products became a meme thanks to their aggressive promotion through gaming culture and pricing, but good hardware does have the ability to improve your performance. Let’s look at how you can increase your chances at victory in League of Legends with a change or two.

Monitors

The most important aspect you can improve is your refresh rate. Ages ago, FPS and MOBA players realized that 120/144 Hz gives a much smoother experience than 60 Hz. These days, 240 Hz is the new meta. The more FPS you get as a result, the easier it is to dodge skillshots and fire them back.

Then comes response time. A few years ago 1ms became available, and even cheap gaming monitors aren’t crippled by bigger delays. This is where you need to be mindful of settings as well. Software vertical sync in the League of Legends client and G-Sync/FreeSync hardware features significantly increase the response time on any monitor.

Finally, there is screen resolution. 1920x1080 remains directly in the sweet spot, but 2560x1440 has become much more accessible over the past two years. Jumping to a higher resolution is arguably the most noticeable upgrade, as you gain more screen estate.

Mice

Mice are about Hz as well. The spec is called “mouse polling rate”. It defines how often your device communicates its sensor position with the computer. You should strive for 1,000 Hz (one report per millisecond). Luckily, most new gaming mice boast this number. Anything better, should it hit the market, would be excessive, as your monitor is still capped at 1ms.

As for DPI, you shouldn’t think about it all. Most pros settle for the default 800 DPI or lower, and then adjust the sensitivity sliders in the game client. League of Legends requires precision, and the insane 16,000 DPI on new mice is unnecessarily high.

Keyboards

When we are talking competitive PC gaming in 2018, a mechanical keyboard is a must. Most membrane keyboards have rollover limits, which often means you cannot press more than two buttons at once. Mechanical keyboards provide a viable balance between switch travel distance and actuation point. Your presses are recognized a bit earlier than when actually you finish pinning the key down.

If you have a narrow desk, consider buying a numeric keypad. Few things break your concentration more than hitting the keyboard with your dominant hand. Place them at least shoulder-length apart; it will both help your coordination and protect your musculoskeletal system.

Mousepads

We strongly encourage you to at least have a mousepad. It will protect your mouse and your desk from the wear and tear that is inevitable with all the throwing and dodging. A consistent surface aids in landing your direction-targeted spells as well.

Should your desk be big enough, go for a wide mousepad. You get more space to move your mouse around, which in turn, allows you to further decrease the mouse sensitivity and become extremely sharp with your skillshots.

A branded mousepad also enables you to roll over a pro player
