Smelling good helps others help you
Several studies show that perfume encourages other people to be helpful to you.
More Evidence That it Works
Baron, R. (1997) The sweet smell of … helping: effects of pleasant ambient fragrance on prosocial behavior in shopping mall. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 23, 498–503. Google Scholar, Link
How it was done
A female accomplice either with or without heavy perfume walks down the street and ‘mistakingly’ drops a glove. Passersby let her know more often when she was wearing perfume than when she was not.
We also behave nicer to people in malls who smell nice.
