Prior to the first marathon to be hosted in the Scottish town of Aberdeen, in 1979 neither my mother nor my father had ever run a long distance. My father had long held an interest and a good understanding of how to become fit and strong. He had won gymnastic competitions as a student and trained with weights daily. To run a marathon was a whole new prospect.
