It will take time to achieve complete recovery after revision total hip replacement surgery. You can say it may take nearly 6–8 week’s post the surgery for the patient to recovery slightly, say around 20%. However, this will not be sufficient for the patient to return to normal activities and resuming office. To gain such mobility, it will take nearly 3–6 months’ time.

What type of hip revision surgery the patient may require, will be defined after thorough diagnosis by the doctor. Focus will be given on focusing at the condition of the hip abductor muscle. Is the muscle weak or stable? That will certainly play its part to define the recovery time.

The recovery time for a hip revision operation is usually substantially longer than the recovery time for an initial hip replacement. Some people may take 12 to 18 months to fully heal, especially if bone was sliced or muscles/tendons were reattached to the hip.

After hip or knee revision surgery, most patients are encouraged to walk using a crutch or walker the same day or the next day. Patients who are unable to return home after one or two nights in the hospital may be discharged to a skilled nursing facility or may be admitted to the hospital for a few more days until it is safe to return home.

Typically, the most challenging phase post the revision hip replacement surgery is the first couple of weeks that follows. This time is used for rehabilitation and can be quite painful as well as challenging. During this phase, doctors will advise the patients to use the walker or crutches for movement. But that said, the patient is advised against putting much weight and stress on the newly replaced joint. After a period of 15–20 days, the surgeon will do a follow-up check. The professional will examine the incision to ensure that the healing process is happening properly and no infection has occurred as such.

After the revision hip replacement surgery, it will take around four weeks for the patient to participate in physical therapy activities. However, because each person’s operation is unique, the recovery time will change and a patient may need to wait longer than the presumed period of four weeks to begin physical therapy. When you are ready to begin these exercises, your surgeon will notify you and arrange for you to meet with the physical therapist.

During your rehabilitation, you will see your surgeon on a regular basis for follow-up sessions.

The time it takes to do a revision operation is generally longer than the time it takes to perform the original process for hip replacement, which raises the risk of problems. Recuperating from a revision hip replacement is trickier and time-consuming than recovering from the first joint replacement surgery. Joint stiffness, movement difficulties, and other issues can result as a result of this.
