Going without plastic

I was having a talk with some friends about how hard it is to avoid plastic packaging, drinks bottles, food wrapping, bags, etc. So I thought I would try to avoid using anything plastic for a week and see how it went. I then realised that wasn’t going to be possible, I mean my keyboard is plastic, the toilet seat is plastic, many of my clothes contain or are entirely plastic, the list goes on.

I’m going to settle for not buying anything plastic. For a month rather than a week.

I honestly don’t think I’m going to be able to make it. Not a great mentality you might think, but this is more about the journey than the outcome. I have a one year old child and I’m not willing to put his health or wellbeing aside for this. I also know that this is going to be really hard and my willpower is not infinite. There is always the choice of not buying plastic (or anything for that matter), but the outcome might be that I go hungry or thirsty, I or my stuff remain dirty or that I am unable to fulfil my current role as a software developer.

I’ll be writing a post each day documenting what I needed to do to avoid buying plastic and keeping track of what I had little choice but to buy.

I hope to see you back here tomorrow. Happy new year!

See how day one went here.
