“I believe that talking to people about things that unite us, like a book, brings us closer together.”

Uli Beutter Cohen began Subway Book Review as a way to better understand her fellow New Yorkers. The ongoing project, a photo journal of subway riders and their reading materials, is as much about telling people’s stories as it is about discovering the books they read.

When Uli started sharing her “book reviews with strangers,” fellow readers and the culturally curious took interest. Today, Subway Book Review hosts reading retreats, has regular contributors in London and Mexico City, and makes stops in cities from Portland, OR, to Cairo, Egypt.
