The Freestyle Rapper Who Tries To Be A Morning Person

“Are you a morning person?” I ask. “I try to be.” Eric replies. How does someone TRY to be a morning person? You either are one or you aren’t. Granted, this changes over one’s lifetime, but not as a trait. He tells me he knows he has higher productivity in the morning and so sacrifices how much he may enjoy sleeping in for good work.
Finding truly honest and open people who share their emotions without attached needs for recognition or drama is not easy. It seems age can be a guiding force towards becoming humble and shedding insecurities but can only give so many gentle reminders to those who are trapped beneath the weight of their needs. I have met people as young as fifteen who radiate their peace with self, yet also met fifty-year-olds who have not escaped Dr. Erickson’s identity vs. role confusion stage of development.
Eric has an exceptional level of self-awareness, which made conversation with him so much more fulfilling than with many people lost in the haze of their identity and grief with aspects of who they perceive themselves as. He is drawn to the idea of rallying his life behind a cause and using the art of speech to persuade others. When I asked him question number one, he responded with “Martin Luther King- because his ability to influence people so with his speech was extraordinary.”
When I later questioned his desire to be famous he responded with a desire to emulate the success people like Dr.King had by learning how to use voice, speech, and writing to influence people.
His ultimate interest is creativity, and when I asked: “I wish I had someone with whom I could share ____?” He immediately said, “six weeks creating something together, without any thought given to domestic activities.”
Within the space of about an hour and a half and thirty-six questions, I found out Eric is a smart guy with a lot of creative talent who spends his days at work dedicated to creativity who- like many of the rest of us here in the bay area- is currently at a startup. What sets him apart? Self-awareness. An optimistic attitude with a dash of expectation control added in there. Last but definitely not least, he picks awesome people to be friends with (i.e. me).
