Be a “sucker” for America…and for humanity.

Who does America want to be at this time? Our nation’s motto is a place to start.

E pluribus unum is the latin motto of the United States of America. Translated it means, “Out of many, one.” It reflects the joining together of 13 colonies “to form a more perfect union.” That more perfect union remains an ongoing effort for all persons — including those beyond our borders — who seek a living example of that motto: Out of many, one.

What makes that motto so appealing to humankind is that it speaks to freedom. This is the freedom to realize one’s full potential as individual persons and as a people. A social order that supports this would create a government that prioritizes the human values which inspire a more perfect union.

These values include freedom of thought and speech, equality before the law, participatory government, due process, transparency, and some degree of equity and security as basis for common welfare. These values are captured in our federal and state constitutions and amended from time to time. Naturally, we latch on to systems that enable our survival. But in the spirit of freedom, we love the systems that support us to realize our potential — where effort is recognized and respected.
