Working at Canvas is pretty awesome. And, since we’re in the mobility space, we have some real car lovers at the office. We can’t help but wonder what cars our teammates drove as youngsters.

Look at this wonderful bunch.

So, Canvas, what was your first car?

Kevin

My first car was an ‘88 Toyota Celica. We were born the same year. It broke down 4 times in 12 months, but it was only $1500!

Eric

My first car was a Silver Mazda 3. We got off to a rocky start. I killed the battery the first night I drove it home from the dealership — not realizing I left the lights on. Thankfully, that was the only hiccup I had in the 8+ years I drove it…. although the same cannot be said for when my sister had it….. just ask her.

James

My first car was a brown 1983 Toyota Tercel wagon liftback that I shared with my mom. It survived thirteen Chicago winters, one worn down alternator, and it clocked 0–60 in… let’s just say eventually.

Who could give a speeding ticket to this smiling face?

Jacqueline

That actually makes me think of a funny story. On the morning of my 16th birthday, I took my driving test (in my hand-me-down, candy- apple-red Pontiac Grand AM). After barely passing, I insisted on driving home — only to be pulled over for speeding. Luckily, my new driver’s license had my birthdate on it, and the officer let me off the hook with a warning.

Kurt

My first car was a 1990 Acura Legend. It was a boat — biggest car I’d ever seen, but it would comfortably fit all my friends and let us cruise around. It also had driver side window control, which let me lock the windows from going down if someone farted allowing all of us to fully appreciate the foulness of it

John

My first car was a 4-speed 1979 Volvo sedan given to me as a gift by a family friend. When I left for college, my parents donated it to a local Louisville mission to use for their deliveries

My first car was a maroon 5.0 Liter Ford Mustang GT, with a maroon interior to match (of course). I threw on a limo tint and dual Flowmasters, as well as some factory 17" Chrome Cobra rims. Embarrassing but amazing at the same time. That thing was fast — almost got a ticket peeling out of the high school parking lot just one week after getting my license. Luckily, it was a stick shift, and I blamed it on my inexperience with the clutch. Got out of it!

Phil

My first car was a ‘96 green Saturn wagon (5-speed, manual). I don’t think I treated it too kindly…. Long story short: I had to swap the engine after just 6 months

Alex

Our family had a black, ‘96 Jeep Grand Cherokee that we called Black Beauty. It was my older brother’s first car then mine. With a key fob that opened all but the driver’s door, interior lights that chose to work when they wanted, a fender that looked like it was struck multiple times with a battering ram, and cloth seats so worn in they hugged you upon sitting… it earned its nickname.

Charlie

My first car was a 1997 Green Explorer XLT. It was an awesome car that all three kids in my family drove. We called it the the Exploder because we thought it sounded cool.

In high school, I drove a 2000 Infinity i30. Back then, it was so much more than a car. It was our spot. When we talk about high school today, almost all of our stories begin with sitting in that car and embarking on some type of wild journey.

Ben

My first car was a hand-me-down from my older sister — a 2001 silver v4 Mitsubishi Galant with cloth interior. I absolutely loved that car.

Max

My first car was a 1997 ML350 in pearl white. It was a hand-me-down from my aunt & a cherished car. I grew up in a predominantly Asian community, so I was exposed to the concept of drifting at a young age. Within the first 2 weeks of getting the car, I took it out for a quick “drift”. Afterwards, I looked up the car specifications to find out that the ‘97 ML350 was rated with the highest rollover rate among SUVs.
