Am I a traitor? Perhaps, but traitor to whom? Which is more rational, and sane? To continue driving a taxi and watch as my income slowly drops to zero? Or, to let go of my emotional attachment to cab driving, to ignore the peer pressure coming from my coworkers — many of whom now despise and disavow me — and accept the reality that people are choosing, are preferring, and are even demanding something other, something they feel better addresses their needs? Should I remain loyal to cab drivers? Or, to myself?
Ultimately, the argument boils down to a question of priority. As a society, should we worry about preserving the jobs and incomes of cab drivers, or about the best, most efficient, most reliable system for providing transportation to citizens? Nobody owes me a living, and if I can’t make enough to have a comfortable life, then it’s on me to find a job that will. Are Lyft and Uber perfect? God no! I have serious issues in the area of their treatment of workers, public safety, among others. However, at the end of the day, my evaluation is that they offer a better system. If “evolving” is treason, then I plead guilty as charged.
