The first Audi e-trons have rolled off the production line as the German car manufacturer starts to ramp up intrigue ahead of the imminent launch of its first all-electric SUV.

It is a huge deal for Audi, as it attempts to get its foot in the door of the new EV world order. In the eyes of the general public, the segment — which we’re dubbing SUEV, so if it catches on you know you heard it here first — is dominated by Tesla with the Model X. However, the Jaguar I-Pace has received rave reviews and Mercedes-Benz just revealed its contender, the ECQ, so Audi has its work cut out.

Peter Kössler, member of the board of management at Audi, is optimistic about the e-tron’s chances, saying: “It features innovative technologies such as virtual exterior mirrors and combines traditional Audi qualities in handling and dynamics with technical Vorsprung that goes far beyond the car.

“Our Brussels plant was comprehensively modernised for the production of the electric car. This is the world’s first certified CO2-neutral mass production in the premium segment.”

Facts and figures

The all-important figure for EVs is range and here the Audi is expected to be a good match for the EQC, achieving about 250 miles on the WLTP cycle. And performance figures are decent too, with the electric motors producing 400bhp, contributing to an impressive sub-sex-second 0–62mph acceleration time.

The Audi e-tron will make its public debut on September 17 at an event in San Francisco.
