The ultimate California drop top cruiser machine!
By Tim Burton
The Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet blends the traditional S Class luxury, with the overwhelming power of a giant Biturbo V12 to create the ultimate package of extravagance. Join me for a full look and test drive to see what it is like!
Boasting the 6.0l twin turbocharged V12 powerplant that produces 630hp and 1,000nm of torque, there is no question that the S65 has ‘enough power’ for any real world usage. However, due to the sheer amount of torque provided, it is unable to incorporate the latest generation of gearbox, making do with a 7-speed automatic. Simultaneously, there is no option for 4matic all wheel drive, and the car must haul around a fairly large weight up front. In the mean time, the occupants will find the latest S Class technology and driver assistance systems, along with the top levels of luxury you expect to find in their flagship model.
In Cabriolet form, the AMG S65 comes in at $252,000, making it a steep point to entry, especially when the more agile S63 with the 4.0l Biturbo V8 would save a fair amount of that outlay. To the buyer that will settle for nothing but the tradition of a V12 in the top-spec Mercedes S Class, then look no further, the new and updated S65 is a spectacular offering.
