A Formula 1 race in Vietnam could happen in the future after the Central Government gave a green light for the organisers to work on the proposal.

The word around a Vietnam Grand Prix has been in the news since last year with Liberty Media working on a deal with the Government to host a race in the South East Asian country, in a bid to expand the sport’s horizon.

Following a regular cabinet meeting on Thursday, the Minister and Chairman of the Government Office, Mai Tien Dung confirmed to the local press about their Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc extending support for the proposed grand prix event in Hanoi.

A statement on Reuters from Dung read: “All [Government] ministries and agencies support the idea to create a new attraction for Hanoi. Hanoi authorities have asked people living in the planned area for their opinions about holding the race and they have all shown their support, to attract tourists.”

The proposed venue for the race is said to be around the My Dinh National Stadium in Nam Tu Lien district which will enable them to utilise the existing infrastructure with few additions after the initial circuit around Hoan Kiem (Sword Lake) was rejected.

The Government, however, has asked Hanoi not to spend state budgets on the race but call for business enterprises to use private funds rather than public’s. No further details has emerged so far with Liberty Media yet to response on the news.
