E-scooters now feature in the updated Irish Driver Theory Test.

In early 2024, the RSA introduced the first changes to the Irish Driver Theory Test since 2011.

These changes were introduced to enhance road safety and to reflect the changing reality on Irish roads, which now includes e-bikes, e-scooters, and an expanded motorway network.

In this article, Driving Class talks through the driver theory test changes for anybody planning to sit the test soon.

Introduction of New Questions

  1. Updated question bank: Perhaps the biggest change is the size of the question bank. Whereas before, there were approximately 800 questions, the driver theory test now includes over 1,500 questions and covers a broader range of topics.

2. Inclusion of new topics: New questions now cover areas such as:

  • Distracted driving: This part of the exam, which the 2011 version already touched on, goes deeper into the dangers of mobile phone use and other distractions (such as coffee, for example) while driving.
  • Eco-driving: You don’t need to driver an EV to partake in eco-driving practices. The driver theory test now seeks to promote fuel-efficient driving practices and an understanding of eco-friendly driving.
  • Vulnerable road users: Perhaps because of a tragic recent in fatal road accidents involving vulnerable road users, the new driver theory test focuses more on cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists to increase safety awareness.

New Study Materials

3. Updated Learning Resources: The change in course content naturally means that official RSA course learning materials have been updated, including the Driver Theory Test handbook and the RSA’s online resources.

The RSA didn’t announce the changes to the Driver Theory Test in advance, so they will offer refunds to people who recently bought an older version of the app (but not the physical book, unfortunately).

How much do the new Driver Theory Test materials cost?

The revised prices for the new driver theory test are as follows:

  • The updated Driver Theory Test book is available for €21.99.
  • Online RSA materials begin at €23.00.
  • The app is available on Android and iOS for €16.99.

Has the format of the driving theory test changed?

The driving theory test is still the same format as before. You have to answer 35 questions out of 40 correctly within 45 minutes.

Can I take the changed driver theory test in a different language?

Yes, you can take the driver theory test in a different language. The RSA offers test translations (voiceovers) in Arabic, Polish, Irish, Romanian, Portuguese, Brazilian, Lithuanian, and Russian.

To schedule the new driver theory test in a different language, see here.

Can I get special accommodations for the new driver theory test?

Certainly. As was the case with the old driver theory test, candidates with special needs can request accommodations such as extra time, reading assistance, or a separate testing environment. Other provisions include:

  • Reader recorder service
  • Dyslexia support professional
  • Irish sign language support

See more information on special accommodations here.

Is the New Driver Theory Test hard?

The revised Irish Driver Theory Test is larger but not necessarily harder. It will take a little extra time on your part to answer all of the questions in the test bank, but the new questions are more of an extension of the existing questions rather than a complete revision.

In short, the same principles apply — study diligently with a view to becoming a better driver, and you’ll pass the theory test in no time.

Preparing for the Test

To ensure you’re fully prepared for the updated Irish Driver Theory Test, Driving Class recommends that everyone planning on taking the test follow these steps:

  • Review the Updated Handbook: Obtain the latest version of the RSA Driver Theory Test Handbook and study all sections thoroughly.
  • Take Practice Tests: Utilize the RSA’s online practice tests to gauge your knowledge and identify areas for improvement.
  • Attend a Theory Test Preparation Course: Consider enrolling in a preparation course if you need additional support or structured learning.
  • Stay Informed: Regularly check the RSA website for any further updates or changes to the test.
