Dallas Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jejurikar Explains What the Brazilian Butt Lift Is
Brazilian butt lifts have been increasing in popularity over the past few years. It should not, however, be taken lightly. This isn’t a procedure just any doctor can perform. It involves a delicate surgery and a significant time commitment dedicated to recovery.
Thousands of patients have received Brazilian butt lift surgery and have expressed their immense satisfaction with the results. That being said, that doesn’t mean the operation doesn’t come with its fair share of risks.
Let’s delve into what the Brazilian butt lift is, who qualifies for it, and how you can get the surgery safely by a qualified surgeon.
What is Brazilian butt lift surgery?
As the name implies, the Brazilian butt lift was developed in Brazil by Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, a Brazilian plastic surgeon who regrettably passed away in 2016.
The procedure involves removing fat from the lower back and abdomen with liposuction to contour the waist to better complement the buttocks augmentation. This fat is stored within a specially designed container where it’s kept safe from contamination before being inserted back into the buttocks. The operation typically takes 2–3 hours from start to finish.
Should you get a Brazilian butt lift?
Genetics plays a significant role in the shape and size of your buttocks. While exercise and a proper diet can help you achieve a fuller, rounder buttocks, there are certain genetic factors — such as body type and bone structure — that cannot be overcome through exercise and dieting alone.
For some people, cosmetic surgery is the only way to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing buttocks they would find to be satisfactory. If you desire a fuller, rounder buttocks quickly (regardless of genetics) then Brazilian butt lift surgery may be a viable option.
What are the advantages of Brazilian butt lift surgery?
Brazilian butt lift surgery comes with a number of advantages that make it extremely attractive to those who are dissatisfied with the shape of their buttocks. These advantages include:
- A shortcut to a more youthful and shapely figure
- Creates an appealing balance between the lower and upper body
- Adds more fullness to the buttocks while reducing pockets of fat in other parts of the body
- Allows patients to overcome genetic barriers
What makes you a good candidate for a Brazilian butt lift?
While effective, Brazilian butt lift surgery isn’t suited for everyone. Consider your reasons for wanting the surgery, and whether or not you’re physically suited for what the surgery entails.
A good candidate for a Brazilian butt lift will meet the following requirements:
- You have enough fat stored in other parts of your body that can be harvested and used for the operation.
- You have good skin on your buttocks and hips. If you have loose skin in these areas, a Brazilian butt lift will not alleviate this problem. Other operations address this issue, such as the thigh and buttock lift surgery.
- You have a desire for a fuller, rounder buttocks.
- You’re willing to stay off of your buttocks for several week post-surgery as you recover.
What about buttock implants?
If you don’t meet the above requirements for Brazilian butt lift surgery that doesn’t mean you should give up all hope. Speak with a board-certified surgeon to see what options are available to you. If your surgeon determines you’re not suited for a Brazilian butt lift, they may suggest you get a buttock implant instead.
Buttock implants are devices that are inserted within the buttocks to give the area more definition and shape. While buttock implants are a viable option, Brazilian butt lifts are often more advantageous because they provide a rounder, fuller buttocks without the need for implants.
It should also be noted that buttock implants often look and feel less natural than a Brazilian butt lift when performed by a qualified cosmetic surgeon.
What are the risks of a Brazilian butt lift?
As with any surgery, there are risks associated with Brazilian butt lifts. The very act of removing fat from one part of the body and transferring it elsewhere can lead to significant complications when done improperly.
The risks associated with Brazilian butt lift surgery include but aren’t limited to:
- Stretch marks
- Necrosis of fat or surrounding fat
- Fat embolism (fat makes its way into the bloodstream and travels to the lungs which could lead to death)
- Excessive blood loss
- Deep vein thrombosis
While many of the risks associated with Brazilian butt lift surgery are alarming on paper, virtually all of the fatal complications occur from surgeons injecting the fat deep to the gluteus maximus muscle. This used to be an acceptable manner in which to perform the procedure, but safety data unequivocally reveals that this places patients at unnecessarily high risk for potentially catastrophic complication.
Brazilian butt lift surgery involves specialized training. Many plastic surgeons are trained to perform breast augmentations, tummy tucks, and scar repairs. That does not mean that they are qualified to perform Brazilian butt lift surgery. In general, physicians who are trained by the American Board of Plastic Surgery have undergone specialized training in fat transfer techniques and can provide patients with the highest degree of safety.
The best surgeons will have performed hundreds of successful surgeries, have countless testimonials by satisfied patients, and would be publicly recognized by their peers.
