#16 Resolved to constantly look for God at work, seeking to gain insight from what He is doing.

“For they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.” Mark 6:52

They stood before five thousand men, not to mention women and children, at the end of the day. The disciples knew the people were going to need something to eat, but there was nowhere in sight for them to get food. Their thought was to encourage Jesus to send them into the surrounding villages so they could get something to feed the people.

Jesus had a different plan. He said to them, “You feed them.” Now obviously, this made absolutely no sense whatsoever. The disciples were not carrying any food or enough money to buy some food for that matter. There were no five dollar Little Caesar pizza options where they were located.

They hoped to change Jesus’ mind by saying, “Do you want us to spend 200 denarii to buy them some bread?” Surely, the thought of shelling out that kind of cash would have caused Jesus to pause. But He didn’t. Instead He said to them. “How many loaves do you have?” This sent the disciples on a bread hunt. They came back with a small snack that a little boy had brought with him that day. “We have five loaves and two small fish.”

Then Jesus did a remarkable work. He had all of the people sit in groups of hundreds and fifties. He lifted up the meal, blessed it, and had the disciples hand it out. They did not run out of provisions. In fact, when it was all said and done, they actually had twelve full baskets of broken pieces of bread, and also of the fish.

God was working through His Son right before their eyes. The saddest commentary concerning this is found in Mark 6:52. He writes that the disciples had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves. This statement was made after they were slow to believe that Jesus was walking on the water. The supernatural event which they witnessed with the loaves should have supported their faith to believe that Jesus could walk on the water. But, they missed it.

How many times has God come through in your life and yet you still find yourself worried, fearful, or filled with anxiety over a particular situation? God administers grace in our times of need to strengthen our faith. He works all around us for our ultimate good. When He works around us, it is in efforts to strengthen our faith for the next challenge in life. However, if we gain no insight from His work around us, we will journey through life, hard-hearted and filled with doubt and anxiety. Open your eyes today to His work. Resolve to gain insight.

Disciple’s Task: Every hour today, stop for two minutes and ask the Lord: What are You trying to teach me? At the end of this day, look back at what all has happened to you. Who did you speak to? What did you accomplish?
