How To Update Your Skin Care For The Spring & Summer

Spring is here — pack away those oversized sweaters and heavy winter jackets. While you are updating your wardrobe, make sure to transition your skin care products for the warmer season. Leading Bakersfield surgeon and dermatology expert, Dr. Lemus-Rangel recommends the following tips for the perfect spring skin care routine.

Lightweight Moisturizer, Please

During the winter, heavy cream moisturizers are needed to combat the cold and dry air. However, during the spring and summer, temperatures and humidity rise. Instead of heavier and creamier moisturizers that lead to clogged pores and breakouts, opt for light moisturizers which will provide ample moisture for your skin. Products with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid will give you a natural dewy complexion.

Sunscreen Is A Must

While you should be wearing sunscreen year-round, it is especially important to wear sunscreen in the warmer months of spring and season when days are longer and UVA/UVB rays are more intense. Even if you are only exposed to the sun for 10 to 15 minutes daily, over time this incidental sun exposure causes significant sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. Choose a high-SPF sunscreen (ideally 50 SPF, but at minimum 30 SPF) to protect your skin from chronic UV damage. Remember to reapply sunscreen throughout the day!

Exfoliate Gently

Using a mild exfoliation in the spring sheds dull winter skin leaving you with renewed, radiant skin. It’s important you are gentle to your skin — exfoliating weekly should be sufficient for most people. Aim for products with salts and sugars or enzymatic scrubs made with fruit acids, instead of harsh exfoliants that include shells, nuts, or microbeads.
