Podcast Listening Challenge Week 13: ExpediTIously Podcast

Another week, another podcast. I have wanted to listen to this Pod for a long time but I just hadn’t picked it. I’m a Big TIP fan because he is one of the most eloquent rappers out there. He makes use of all the words in the dictionary and you can tell that by reading the title of his podcast. Rapper, record label founder, clothing brand founder and many more things, you wonder how on earth TI has time to record a podcast and why he would even do it.

This is an interview based Podcast and each episode is dependent on the guest and what they bring to the table. Thankfully the podcast has been around for over a year and therefore there is a plethora of guests to choose from. It would be no fun to pick a guest that I know intimately so I picked the episode with Vince “Vinsanity” Carter. A future Hall of Fame NBA player and just an all around good guy.

This podcast has one of the best intros you will hear anywhere, TI highlights all his diverse skills, namely beating your ass, kissing your girl, tucking his kids in and then he will lead a march on the weekend. Just like anything with TI, he says it with his chest and you really feel his words.

He quickly goes into conversation with Vince Carter and asks him about the Corona virus and whether he may play again given that the league has not been active since March. Vince Carter has had a storied career that has lasted over 20 years in the NBA which is a crazy amount of time and quiet a few teams, but he is most famous for his time at The Toronto Raptors, where he was dubbed Vinsanity.

2000 Slam Dunk Competition

Vinsanity made the slam dunk contest into something special with his insane vertical leap but unfortunately he only participated in 1 contest. When TI quizzed him about it he responded that he did not want to be pigeonholed as a dunker, so he participated and got it off the bucket list and moved on. Its safe to say the Dunk Contest has never quite reached those heights ever since he left. Carter has never won an NBA championship, which would be a great feather in his cap as he winds down his career.

In this episode we also got to find out that Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter are cousins and actually played on the same team at one stage. Which is pretty special because who wouldn’t want to play alongside their family members. One thing I did find out of place was the way ads just interrupted the episode as they were going along, but I guess the bills have to be paid. For a man with a 20 year career I expected a much longer episode but i’m not complaining about an hour worth of content.

ExpediTIously Youtube Channel

Overall this is a good podcast but I believe its biggest asset is also its biggest crutch. Having watched TI in multiple interviews, I know that he is an extremely interesting and charismatic individual that you never want to stop talking. He mesmerizes you with his wordplay and his eloquent story telling but now that he is the interviewer, he has to cede that position to his guest and he does that well. But as a fan I really want him to keep talking because I know 80% of his guests will not be as charismatic as he is. For this podcast I would like to see TI with a co-host and then they invite guests sporadically. This would be podcast gold. Personally I would vote to have Killer Mike as his co-host because they can both discuss politics, music and sport well. Plus they are beacons of hope in their communities and they are two very smart individuals. With both of them having busy schedules it could be difficult to implement but one can only dream.
