If you keep developers or others around, they start asking for more money. And keeping the average price of talent low is the first, second, and third goal of the games industry. They know their employees enjoy working on games, and they intend to make bank on that. Game developers should log how many hours they work and figure out how much they’re ACTUALLY paid, not what their salary says.

And if it means making less money overall to make sure developers aren’t paid well, that is something they’re willing to take on. Boot out the experienced crew who might be starting to feel like they’re not just a disposable number in a spreadsheet and bring in some fresh (read: cheap) blood. There will always be developers falling over themselves to work in the games industry. And the quality of the end product doesn’t even matter, so why shell out for experienced people? Horrible buggy games sell just as well, and often even better than, solid products (That Simcity ‘failure’? Best-selling game on the Origin platform of all time shortly after release. Ignore what gamers say, follow the sales to know what they’re willing to pay for.)

The games industry has been cancerous since the 1980s and shows no sign of stopping any time soon. I hope others don’t figure out your identity, because the games industry is also profoundly incestuous. They will bend over backwards and break laws to blackball anyone who rocks the boat.
