Rainer Gruessner was appointed The University of Arizona Chairman of Surgery and Professor of Immunology in 2007. Ever since, Dr. Gruessner mentored students, residents, fellows and junior faculty to develop into esteemed medical professionals capable of delivering exceptional care to patients. He strongly believes that training the next generation of surgeon leaders starts at the top and that a chief has to lead by example.

Dr. Gruessner has a strong passion for patient care and always strives to develop new surgical innovations. His contributions have led to the implementation of several groundbreaking practices in organ transplantation and general surgery, and several of his procedures were the first of their kind performed in Arizona.

These procedures include the first living and deceased intestinal transplants, the first multivisceral transplant, and the first autologous islet transplant ever in the Southwest. Working simultaneously as a practicing surgeon and as an educator, Dr. Gruessner can share the skills and techniques he has acquired with the next generation of students and residents working to save lives.

As he continues to educate aspiring surgeons in transplant surgery, he hopes to see them someday produce groundbreaking surgical procedures of their own. Several of his trainees and students have already received awards and recognition for their medical research and the future of transplant surgery is in good hands under Dr. Rainer Gruessner’s instruction. The medical community continues to look to Dr. Gruessner as an innovator and leader in transplantation surgery.
