The Black Kite (Milvus migrans) is a raptor with a diverse and opportunistic diet. As an adaptable species, Black Kites have a wide range of food preferences depending on their habitat and availability of prey. Their diet primarily consists of small mammals, such as rodents and rabbits, which they hunt by scanning the ground from the air and swooping down to catch their prey with their sharp talons. Additionally, Black Kites are skilled at scavenging, and they often take advantage of carrion, feeding on dead animals and leftovers. They are also known to feed on insects, reptiles, amphibians, and even birds. In coastal areas, Black Kites may hunt for fish, taking advantage of their agility and precise flight to snatch fish from the water’s surface. Their ability to adapt their diet to various food sources allows Black Kites to thrive in a variety of environments, from open grasslands to forested areas and even urban landscapes.
