From the start…

Well writing has never been my strong point. Like squeezing blood from a stone, chasing the wind, pinning a wave on the sand (Sound of Music reference), so is the task of getting words from my head onto paper. Yet I have something to say. So here goes…

I am a junior doctor in a major trauma centre emergency department in the heart of London. My hospital sits at the epicentre of four of London’s largest gangs, so police regularly trawl the corridors, sometimes armed, sometimes not. Shouting, collapsing, bleeding patients flood every inch of space, sometimes sick, sometimes not. But all wanting help, answers and perhaps a good vent about their GP who doesn’t seem to be doing anything, despite the 18 scans they’ve recently had. I chose to be here because of the drama and energy. It’s never boring and any day or night I could come home laughing, crying, cringing or tearing my hair out… maybe a little like the patient’s I’ve just seen. It’s a chaotic, vibrant life and funnily enough, I love it.

I am also someone who has been impacted and forever changed by the stories and reality of modern slavery. A global nefarious injustice involving the sale of men, women and children for the purposes of forced prostitution and sexual exploitation, forced labour, domestic servitude and other forced criminal activities. Slavery rears its ugly, oppressive, atrocious head no matter where I look. Human beings reduced to commodities with nothing but financial value. I can’t stand it. It makes me feel sick and helpless and furious all at the same time, whilst bubbling pressure mounts with the urgent need to do something.

This blog is going to be a space where I share my story, detailing struggles and challenges about these, my two worlds. How they intersect and why it’s vital that they do.

But I don’t want it to be depressing. I want it to inspire hope and courage that there can be a different future. A future free from exploitation.
