Nothing

“Ex nihilo nihil fit” — nothing can come from nothing

Full of Mirth and Joy, in the New year Eve
The famous restaurant brimming with revelers.
Wishing ‘Happy New year” to friends and strangers,
I got entangled among ebullient boys and girls giggling and laughing.
“What are you talking about so happily?” I queried
“NOTHING”, came a chorus of lilting voices.
“How can you talk of nothing for so long…?”
I smiled, wished them “All the Best”
And escaped from their clutches to meet a long lost friend
“Happy New Year …How is life?”
Pat came the answer, “Nothing to grudge…”
Having heard ‘Nothing’ twice in a row
I got glued to ‘nothing’ and it got inurned in my mind.
So much so, I could hear ‘nothing’ wherever I go and whomsoever I meet:
“Nothing to worry…” a young man hugging a girl consolingly.
Girl Coming out of a Theatre to friend, “It is all publicity…there is nothing in it…”
“Be careful…say nothing…” the lawyer to his client.
“Why do you want to go there…There is nothing to see…” the wife to the husband.

Soaked in nothing for so long, I began thinking of nothing but nothing.
‘Nothing’ is used to stress the importance of something, such as
Nothing is more important than Character
SILENCE IS NOTHING, DARKNESS IS NOTHING
IS THERE NOT SOMETHING IN ‘NOTHING’?
A MYRIAD THINGS A POET CAN HEAR IN SILENCE
AND AGAIN ENDLESS THINGS HE CAN SEE IN DARKNESS.
To change from Nothing to something I opened a book of verses
And what do I see?
The first poem I see is ‘The Pessimist’ by Ben King:
Nothing to do but work
Nothing to eat but food
Nothing to wear but clothes
To keep one from going nude!
Then I began writing of ‘Nothing’ when the wife came gingerly
“It is time to sleep…What are you writing for so long?”
“NOTHING”. I replied truly
“Oh, I see”, she said,”then let us sleep”
Saying so she switched off the light.
I could see nothing, or, did I see something in Nothing?
