Poland Syndrome

Poland Syndrome is a birth defect that affects the muscles of the chest and arms. It occurs in approximately one in 100,000 newborns, with males being four times more likely to experience it compared to females. Fort Lauderdale Plastic Surgeon Dr. Zoran Potparic can help those suffering from Poland Syndrome.

This disorder primarily affects the sternal region, causing chest wall deformities and absence of certain chest muscles. It also affects the shoulder blades, pectoral muscles and muscles of the forearm.

In some cases Poland Syndrome may be accompanied by other health issues, such as inward- and outward-turned thumbs, clubfoot, facial deformities and spine issues. Signs and symptoms depend upon the severity of the condition.

Diagnosis of Poland Syndrome is typically made during a physical examination. Several tests may be used to aid in the diagnosis, such as an X-ray or MRI. Treatment depends upon the severity of the symptoms and may include physical therapy, prostheses, and surgical intervention.
