TOK Journal #12 (Michael Dowd)

“Reality is my god and evidence is my scripture, big history is my creation story…”

How might reality reconcile science and religion according to Dowd?Defining reality plays a key role in understanding this question.

“Reality is that which when you stop believing in it doesn’t go away.”

“Science gives us the only understanding of God that is undeniably and inescapably real”

Dowd views religion in three segments

Religion 1.0 — Shared wisdom from elders

Religion 2.0 — Text

Religion 3.0 — Science

Does your scientific knowledge impact/influence your religious faith or vice versa? Explain.

Evidence: How reality speaks.

You cant understand religion without science. You cant understand God’s capabilities and work without understanding the science behind it. Dowd views religion and science as two different explanations for existence. He perceives gods as a personification and therefore they are as real as tangible evidence.

Science reflects the worlds global intelligence, as a result there are scientists from varying religions.

Can Faith as a way of knowing be best understood through the lens of history, emotion or reason? why?

“Loving is a way of knowing and for love to know, it must personify.”

Understanding the relationship with reality is vital to the understanding our existence. You can’t experience fantasy in real life, for example, Poseidon is real because it is a personification of the ocean. Understanding the difference between religion and fantasy is vital to our advancement.

Revelations in religion are often subjected to the interpretation of an individual. As a result it is vital to understand the context that these testimonies have risen from.

What new knowledge questions?

To what extent does reality alter perspectives?

To what extent does language impact our understanding of reality?

“Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind,” — Albert Einstein

Support: Science without religion looses much of its value, understanding how the world works seems slightly pointless if there is nothing following life. You cant understand religion without science. You cant understand God’s capabilities and work without understanding the science behind it.

Opposition: Science does not require the support of religion to be a vital and integral part of daily life. Without religion, science is purely based on evidence, removing the dilution of revelation and individual beliefs. As a result, we get a purer and cleaner perspective on the way the world works. Similarly, religion does not require science as a crutch. Religion is the belief in a higher being, it is able to be supported by an individuals unwavering faith.
