I indeed mean shell scripting, with “programs” — i.e.: scripts — being called from the command line. I kind-of forgot about the other kinds, but maybe that’s because I consider Python, JavaScript, Groovy as “real” programming languages these days.

I never consider PHP in any professional manner ;)

As you say: every good tool has a good API, and 1 or possibly more channels to use that API.
