Google Now in Sri Lanka

Google now is not officially active in Sri Lanka but I couldn’t resist not trying it out with all the cool cards and information it shares. I know that second thread is not the best motivation but still I had to find a way. I used to have Google Now activated in my KitKat days on my Xperia L just by opening the app with a VPN application but however it did not work on my new phone.

Prerequisites

adb tools

If you don’t have or don’t want to install Android Studio, this might help you.

Old Google App apk

Then if you have not enabled already, enable Developer tools in your phone by tapping 7 times on the build number of the About phone menu in settings.

Enable USB debugging

If the software suite that comes with your phone is installed in your machine, you won’t have any problems with the drivers but if you can’t see your phone once you enter adb devices in the command propt, refer to this guide from the above adb tools post on XDA.

After setting everything up, run this command from the location of your downloaded old Google app apk or give the path directly with the install command.

adb install -r -d com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-2.6.7.721924.arm.apk

It will install the old version and before opening the app, clear data or else it will force close when opened.

Then you will be presented with a tutorial on enabling Google Now and it will say update the app from the play store.

Once you do that, you will have Google Now enabled in your phone. Customize the cards for you liking!
