Here’s a way that the world has changed in a very meaningful way: Though obscenely rich people may be idiosyncratic, they are not all assholes. They are giving away a greater share of their wealth than any generation before them. There are good people who are also obscenely rich people who are are a far cry from those who give a mere .0001% of their millions (or billions) and call themselves philanthropists. There are obscenely rich people who are making actual change possible. Of course, you may say what you like about Mark Zuckerburg, you may say what you will about Bill Gates, but I urge you not to call their many gifts into question, because you can’t deny that while the government is busy killing people, these are two people who will educate millions, eradicate diseases, and save millions of lives. And if we show some grace and gratitude in response to their actions, many more will follow.
