Definition of Social Networking Sites

Social networking sites have become the essential lifeblood of the strenuous society of the current century. This is a highly global and widespread technology that has been a major influence on our society. Social networking sites (SNS) are internet-based applications that allow people to create their own profile and to interact and form networks with others.

This is usually achieved by allowing users to have categories of friends based on their background. This can result in an increased awareness of other cultures and lead to a greater sense of cultural capital. An SNS that specifically targets a singular cultural group can provide a platform for cultural exchange that would not take place under normal circumstances.

During my exploration of this technology, I have chosen to use Facebook as the prime example of SNS as it effectively illustrates the global impact of the technology. Created in 2004, Facebook has over one billion active users and over half of its active users log on in a given day. Averaging at 20 minutes per session, this interaction with the site takes up a significant portion of time in the lives of people today.

With the range of functionalities available on SNS, they are used increasingly for professional purposes and would be deemed as a handy tool for people of all ages to stay connected to others. The core feature that defines an SNS is the concept of a constructed public or semi-public profile within a bounded system. This system can be viewed and maintained by people that are not part of the site.

The profile is what acts as the platform for the user and it is the ‘self’ in digital form. Users can shape this profile to how they want others to see them and can control the content that is delivered to a specific audience with tools that allow the maintenance of privacy. This provides an effective tool for self-promotion and the ability to create a virtual personality.

Importance of Social Networking Sites

After determining what social network is, and learning about some popular social networking sites, let’s talk about the importance of social networking sites. As we stated, some people believe that networking is everything, and it is true.

Nowadays, social networking sites not only connect people who already know each other, but also allow us to make friends with people we didn’t know before. For example, on Facebook, there is a friend’s friend’s recommendation feature, and on LinkedIn, we can build good relationships to find better career opportunities. With social networking sites, there are no boundaries between countries.

We can meet people from around the world, regardless of their race or culture. This is a positive sign for world peace, as meeting people from different backgrounds helps us understand their conditions and cultures. By understanding each other’s cultures and conditions, we can prevent miscommunication that may lead to conflicts. Another benefit is that there are now many online shops and businesses that market their products on social networking sites.

This is an effective choice for promoting products, as people are very active on their social networks. It is also relatively cheaper than conventional methods and allows for a broader reach in the market. Another reason why social networking sites are important is that people need entertainment. Some people play games on social networking sites, watch funny videos, or join group discussions on social or fun topics. It is indeed easier to find entertainment on social networking sites. Lastly, there is narcissism. For some people who are narcissistic, social networking is a good place to promote themselves.

They can post pictures of themselves, share stories about their daily lives,. express their opinions, and receive compliments from others. This is necessary for people who need self-actualization. Considering these reasons, we can conclude that social networking sites have become an integral part of people’s daily lives. They have become a lifestyle choice.
