Plastic molding, also known as plastic injection molding, is a manufacturing process used to produce plastic parts by injecting molten plastic material into a mold. The process involves several steps:
- Mold Preparation: A mold is created, typically made of steel or aluminum, in the shape of the desired end product. The mold consists of two halves, the cavity and the core, which form the shape of the final part.
- Plastic Material Melting: Plastic pellets or granules are melted in a plastic injection molding machine. The plastic material is heated to a molten state, usually through the use of heating elements and screws that apply heat and pressure to melt and mix the plastic.
- Injection: The molten plastic material is injected into the mold under high pressure. The injection unit of the machine pushes the molten plastic into the mold cavity, filling it completely.
- Cooling and Solidification: After the mold is filled with the molten plastic, the material begins to cool and solidify within the mold. Cooling channels within the mold help expedite the cooling process.
- Mold Opening and Ejection: Once the plastic has solidified, the mold is opened, and the newly formed part is ejected from the mold using ejector pins or plates. The mold is then ready for the next injection cycle.
- Post-Processing: The ejected plastic part may undergo additional post-processing operations, such as trimming excess material, surface finishing (such as polishing or texturing), assembly, or any other required secondary operations.
